Middle-aged unmarried women may experience social pressure to conform to marriage norms, particularly when personal desires conflict with social expectations regarding romantic relationships. This study aimed to describe the forms of cognitive dissonance experienced by a middle-aged unmarried woman and analyze the strategies used to reduce psychological discomfort. The study employed a qualitative single case study involving a 36-year-old unmarried woman. Data were collected through four in-depth semi-structured interviews, with the researcher as the primary instrument, supported by an interview guide, audio recording, and field notes. Data were analyzed using deductive thematic analysis guided by key concepts of cognitive dissonance. The findings showed that cognitive dissonance emerged from the conflict between the participant’s desire to have a partner and her rejection of dating applications and expectations to initiate romantic relationships. She reduced dissonance by limiting social media exposure, avoiding conversations about marriage, developing cognitive justifications, and maintaining the belief that relationships should develop naturally. The study concludes that cognitive dissonance is relevant to understanding her experience within Indonesia’s social and cultural context.
