Abstract

This community engagement program aimed to strengthen digital communication in supporting the waste minimization movement in Pamulang District, South Tangerang, Indonesia. Preliminary mapping was conducted through coordination with the Pamulang District Government, field observations at five waste banks, and a survey of 31 respondents to identify community needs related to waste management and environmental communication. The program employed a community-based participatory approach through environmental education, Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) sessions, and a workshop on digital campaign design. The activities introduced digital media affordances, including visibility, interactivity, persistence, association, sharing, and editability, and guided participants in connecting these affordances with environmental communication strategies. The workshop further addressed audience identification, communication objectives, message development, platform selection, interaction strategies, and calls to action. The findings indicated that participants already possessed relatively strong knowledge and experience related to waste management, suggesting that the need for intervention extended beyond basic environmental education toward strengthening communication capacity. The program provided participants with initial experience in designing more structured digital environmental communication. However, the short duration of the program and the absence of longitudinal measurement limit conclusions regarding behavioral change, sustained participation, or the long-term impact of digital campaigns. Follow-up mentoring is therefore needed to strengthen digital communication practices and support the sustainability of waste minimization initiatives in Pamulang District.
